That’s tiny little me in the top left in the red shirt. You might wonder how this all happened. I’ll admit, sometimes I do, too. Here are details. How I got on the Woman’s World Magazine cover In early August 2022, I received an email from an editor at Woman’s World Magazine. She said she’d been following us on Instagram for some time, and even commented on my recent heart surgery. She said she was writing to inquire about featuring me in a weight loss story all about soup. Was I dreaming? Someone wants to feature me and my love of homemade soup? My husband, Steve, and daughter, Meghan, (who often mock me for my love of soup) were never going to believe this. The editor said that if I agreed to participate she would submit the story idea and would be in touch. I was fine with her pitching the story but figured we wouldn’t hear anything more. We’ve had other inquiries like this in the past, but nothing ever came from them. What […]

Yes, we ate a jellied beef ring on our trip through the South https://postcardjar.com/yes-we-ate-a-jellied-beef-ring-on-our-trip-through-the-south/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=yes-we-ate-a-jellied-beef-ring-on-our-trip-through-the-south https://postcardjar.com/yes-we-ate-a-jellied-beef-ring-on-our-trip-through-the-south/#comments Mon, 01 Apr 2019 11:59:38 +0000 https://postcardjar.com/?p=10247 We’ve featured a lot of unique restaurants on our blog. But none compares to the culinary experience we had earlier this year while road tripping across the south. Flabbergasted (yes, that’s the name of the place) is known across the South for its vintage jellied beef ring and was by far, the most interesting place we’ve eaten yet. Known for its outrageous renditions of retro and vintage American cuisine, including fondue and liver pate, Flabbergasted opened in 2014 in the small, rural town of Truco, Mississippi. We would not have known about it, but for our Canadian friend, Roger Speer, whom we met on a cruise several years ago. Here he is with his with his wife Jane having lunch with us on the Amalfi Coast last summer.  Roger and Jane, had been following our blog as we toured the south, and sent us a text about Flabbergasted. We’ve had many wonderful foodie experiences with Roger and Jane and trusted their opinion. So, it seemed worthwhile to venture off our intended route and make a pit stop in Truco and we stopped for an early dinner. First, a cocktail Our dining experience began with cocktails. I had the Aviator Crashing, […]

See what landed in my wine on our first-class flight from Miami last week https://postcardjar.com/see-what-landed-in-my-wine-on-our-first-class-flight-from-miami-last-week/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=see-what-landed-in-my-wine-on-our-first-class-flight-from-miami-last-week https://postcardjar.com/see-what-landed-in-my-wine-on-our-first-class-flight-from-miami-last-week/#comments Sat, 31 Mar 2018 13:04:55 +0000 https://postcardjar.com/?p=5579 Here’s the story. After one month; two countries; three flights; four days in a hospital; five time changes; six states; and 5,000+ miles, we were beyond ready to board our final flight and begin our journey home last week. We were finishing up a wonderful month-long trip that included a national track and field meet in Kansas, apartment hunting in Tulsa for our daughter, breakfast at The Pioneer Woman Mercantile (yes, again) and a cruise to Mexico. Leaving our car in Houston after the cruise, we boarded a plane to Key West with plans to spend a few days with Steve’s parents who live part of the year in the Florida Keys. Unfortunately, Steve’s dad was quite ill when we arrived and was hospitalized with pneumonia, so we canceled our return flight and stayed a couple more weeks until he was feeling better and we had a chance to really enjoy our time together. (He’s doing much better now, thanks for asking). Needless to say, after being away for nearly a month, we were sooooo ready to come home. We booked a return flight from Miami to Houston (because that’s where we left our car) and were so excited when […]

Eclipse 2017: An earth-shadowing experience from our home in Crete, Nebraska https://postcardjar.com/eclipse-2017-an-earth-shadowing-experience-from-our-home-in-crete-nebraska/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=eclipse-2017-an-earth-shadowing-experience-from-our-home-in-crete-nebraska https://postcardjar.com/eclipse-2017-an-earth-shadowing-experience-from-our-home-in-crete-nebraska/#respond Mon, 18 Sep 2017 16:27:43 +0000 https://postcardjar.com/?p=4121 When science writer Trudy Bell said to never let anyone convince me that 99% of the sun covered was the same as totality, I didn’t know what to think. She then went on to say, “It’s 1% of the sun’s surface, but it’s 100% of the experience.” The moment the moon fully covered the sun during the recent total solar eclipse that passed over our hometown of Crete, Neb., I knew exactly what she meant. And she was right. Ann and I had been looking forward to the eclipse for some time, and we couldn’t wait to welcome travelers from around the nation and the world to our hometown. On the Saturday before the eclipse, we had a booth downtown where we sold t-shirts as well as souvenir postcards — something for the special stamp and cancellation mark from our local post office. We had an absolute blast meeting people from all over the country who were in Crete for the total solar eclipse. We met and talked with people from Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Texas, Oregon, California and Nevada. We learned so much about eclipses from people like Trudy Bell.   More eclipse fun!! This will be Trudy’s SIXTH total […]
